Abstract

Acculturation Assimilation Cultural sensitivity Culture Knowledge base Participation Social support Sports participation Theory of planned behavior
The concepts and theories of culture appearing in this study provide a way of understanding the degree of comfort individuals feel in their culture of origin as well as the mainstream culture. This study will attempt to assess how the extent of sport consumption behaviors, in the context of the dynamic nature of young Koreans, is influenced by the construct of acculturation modes directly and indirectly within the modified theory of planned behavior, thus filling a gap in the literature. This study is significant because it examines whether assimilation has the potential to promote culturally specific participation. A better understanding of sport participation of young Koreans in Australia will contribute to positive outcomes for the wider Korean-Australian community. It was expected that this study would provide an overview of current realities, possibilities and the practical challenges relating to young Koreans’ participation in sport in Australia. Findings from this research contribute to the knowledge base for the development of responsive sport governing bodies and policy relevant to increasing level of sport participation by young Koreans.
