Abstract
These companion works investigate the integration of Western string quartet writing with Arabic quartertone maqam modes, creating a musical language that operates simultaneously within both tonal systems. The research contribution lies in the development of a practical compositional methodology for cross-cultural musical integration that respects the integrity of both traditions – Arabic ornamentation and quartertone inflection are not “exoticised” but treated as structurally equal to Western counterpoint. The work was developed through an Aldeburgh Music residency and collaboration with Al Kamandjâti (Ramallah), embedding the compositional process within direct cross-cultural exchange. Part of the portfolio for the degree of Doctor in Church Music (DMus, Central School of Religion, non-accredited), conferred 2026.
