“For Beauty’s Sake – Beauty and the Creative Act” is a reflective, practice-based keynote in which the researcher sets out, in prose rather than through the works themselves, the theological and aesthetic framework underlying the compositional methodology of Research Area 1. Drawing on patristic, mediaeval, and contemporary sources (Pope Benedict XVI, the ninth-century Scholica Enchiriadis, Arnold Schoenberg, Archimandrite Sophrony, Iain McGilchrist), the address builds an explicit exegesis of three large-scale works, The I AM Sayings of Jesus (B1), Jerusalem-Yerushalayim (B4), and Missa Unitatis (B6), tracing how each negotiates the mediaeval theorists’ distinction between musical “necessity” and “beauty”. The keynote functions as practice-based research exegesis: it makes explicit the structural, theological, and historical reasoning that the scores themselves only imply, generating new critical-reflective knowledge about the researcher’s own creative process across nearly two decades of composition.
